Philanthropology™ 3.0

POWER DYNAMICS

In the web of social sector relationships, funders and grantees constantly negotiate interests from

their relative positions of power. As young leaders we act within this web to accomplish our goals,

and we also act on power relationships by either strengthening them or changing them. Is this a

zero-sum game? Can young leaders do anything to change these long-standing power dynamics?

In this workshop, based around several interactive personal and group exercises, we will focus on

personal tools for getting unstuck and getting empowered in grantee-funder relationships. After

examining the obstacles we face and the stereotypes we often perpetuate, we will share tools and

ideas to improve strained personal relationships, starting with a commitment to move past the

common pitfalls of silence or violence.
